Like most places I’ve loved, I have complicated feelings about Birmingham. Birmingham is a place that I both criticize and defend in the same breath, a place I accidentally began calling home, and a place I miss when I leave. A city whose progressions, failures, mournings, and celebrations feel palpably human. Sometimes that’s terrifying and angering, but usually just comforting and relatable.

Alesha Dawson prefers chilly weather and neat whiskey and is arguably a better writer when both of those are involved. She holds English degrees from the University of Montevallo and the University of Edinburgh. Currently, she is happily settled in Birmingham, Alabama where she teaches high school English and lives with her partner and three cats. Alesha is the founding editor of Screen Door Review – Literary Voices of the Queer South.
